STUDIO MARCO DESSÍ

Thonet 520

With its various versions, the 520 by Marco Dessí is the perfect chair, and not only for dining tables: high sitting comfort unites with a visual and physical lightness. It also fascinates with a confident elegance that carries the culture and history of the classic Thonet bentwood chair within. In his design, Dessí replaced the empty spaces between the bentwood elements with comfortable upholstery. The simple and intelligent construction enables the design of various versions, with or without armrests. Combined with a large selection of cover materials, the chair range is suitable for a wide range of uses, from sophisticated dining to executive meetings. Upholstered element with or without armrests, covers in leather or fabric. Four-leg frame in solid beech wood, natural or stained

The Knight

Essentially, The Knight is a modular lighting system. Arranged like a sinus-curve alternating cone-shaped elements provide lighting upwards and downwards. Both circuits can be addressed individually. Beyond dimming, each element is fit with a dynamic white LED-element that can dim from 2000K candle light to 4000K daylight. Just like spin-up/spin-down it creates two opposed directions of light. These two directions can be dimmed and controlled individually via a Bluetooth™ controller and a mobile app. Starting from a single pair of two elements one can create any size of ring or any length of straight line. As the basic shape is round any additional piece can be added at any angle making literally any shape possible. The clear shape of the individual housings offer a white canvas for the Lobmeyr artisans. On the cones they can elaborate on a variety of traditional crafting techniques such as hammer stroke or embossing. Also the diffuser offers a wide range of customisations swapping the acrylic plates with hand-cut crystal.

Linus

The Linus chair inspiration is rooted in the Nordic design heritage. Homage to an organic modernism, its sumptuous and inviting shapes espouse a contemporary and straightforward minimalism. A modern chair that perfectly travels through past, present and future. During the fabrication, we used the opportunity of the moulds to add flowing shapes and thus extend his range with L- and S- like forms. The armrests also bring a sensual experience and a statement of comfort to this upholstered chair. Through the possibility of different bases (4 legs in metal or wood, or a star-shaped structure), this small chair fits almost everywhere: in domestic and contract environment, alone or in groups, around a meeting table or in a fine dining situation.

Bristol family

These side tables combine the same construction details and finishings as the Bristol nesting tables. Round and square and in different heights they complete the Bristol family.

Odeon bench

The idea of sitting at a table on an upholstered bench has a long-standing tradition. A bench gives the person sitting on it the feeling that they have ample space to spread out, and is also the perfect solution for larger groups around a table: it is always possibly to move closer to one another in comfort on a bench. The Odeon dining sofa takes its cue from all the fantastic properties exhibited by the Odeon sofa

Dakar 019

Dakar is a chair for in- and outdoor use. The backrest of this stackable chair is made out of aluminum sheets, which demonstrate the stability as well as the flexibility of the material. Partially wrapping the legs of the chair like a cloth, the bent metal sheet results in a backrest that gives way like a spring when you lean back![nbsp

Reimagining Otto Wagner

For the  Post Otto Wagner exhibition at the the museum for applied arts vienna the studio was invited to rethink the Otto Wagner table he designed in 1902 for „Die Zeit“  office in vienna.

Palais

With “Palais”, we create  a sofa with a small, basic vocabulary which offers innumerable combinations - with inlays of wood, glass, leather or stone and different coverings and platforms. "Palais" appears like an invitation . Those who accept it are rewarded with the highest level of sitting comfort: The seat cushions dampen any load and the perfect relationship between the seat height and depth creates the feeling of sitting perfectly in any position. The backrest ensures the best back support and the carefully laid out curves complement the edges of the cushions and sitting comfort. Its various materials, covers and surfaces provide innumerable design and configuration options. It scores with its ability to be custom configured: How it is used, positioned and its overall appearance is up to the people that live with it.

Putt_Putt

An installation at space TIM during EXPO 2015 Within the framework of Space TIM for Expo 2015 curated by Marco Sammicheli, each of the five participating design studios were invited to present themselves and their work through a one-week long presentation each. There were no conceptual restrictions of any kind, on condition that the chosen display would provide some form of interaction for the visitors. From the start the studios concept was constantly revolving around the notions of accessibility and playfulness. These notions would later allow us to create a context, in which the visitor could dynamically approach the studios diverse body of work from a completely new and unexpected angle. The decision to place all objects on the ground and arrange them in such manner, that they come to form a minigolf course, plays into the idea of creating a new approach on how to look at objects: No pedestals, no hierarchy, but a parcours that invites the visitor to playfully move through the show with a new awareness, hence proposing to experience the works through distinctive bodily perception.

Parallel Vienna

VIP Lounge for Parallel Vienna 2015 The VIP Lounge, previously used as the Austrian posts accountants’ office, was located in the first floor of the building. The historically charged room took us back to our project: the Viennese salon at Art Basel in 2013  The very similar exigencies led us to set the pitch-black furniture,in a new context, where materiality and color would present themselves in deliberately stark contrast: the opulence vs. the radical! The furniture displays its most distinctive features through an unconventional mix of materials such as nappa alongside space mesh, mostly known for its deployment in sports. Surrounded by paintings of Christian Rosa and Franz Graf the furnishing objects engage in a spirited dialogue with the artworks.

Mono

Mono is both optically and physically a light piece of seating furniture – classic, but with a contemporary update!  It lends some of its formal qualities form ODEON and reveals similar stilistic elements. However, Mono is a new independent creation and is characterized by its slender and fluid appearance. Mono – as the name implies – comes as a single armchair or it can be wonderfully combined with a wide variety of sofas. It can be integrated into public areas (hotels, lobbies, offices etc.) as well as into a private living room as part of a complete concept. As with every piece of Wittmann furniture, Mono offers the highest level of seating comfort and exciting details in the lines which are perfectly crafted. A stool completes the model.

Bristol

Nesting tables in a completely new interpretation. An elegant table-duo with an unusual design and a variety of applications. Moved over a sofa for instance, it provides a flexible table surface. The Bristol collection is also versatile through its rich selection of different surfaces including luxurious leather coverings

Sonnenfelsgasse 3

In 2014 Studio Marco Dessí was commissioned by Wiener Räume GmbH with the renovation and redesign of an apartment at Sonnenfelsgasse 3 in 1010 Vienna. The premises were converted into a studio apartment, which is available for the modern nomad to rent. The facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, a living room with a sleeping unit, work space and a full bath.  The sleeping unit constitutes the center of the apartment: it simultaneously works as a room partition as well as providing working space. The unit presents itself with a possibility to retreat with views to the outside: spatial separation is achieved by curtains and an almost floor to ceiling oak wall, which on the outside makes room for a coat rack. On the root end of the sleeping unit you will find a built in work space. The color scheme is muted and suggests a casual homeliness, while the contrasting colors of the materials emphasize the character of a hotel accommodation. With this project Studio Marco Dessi makes a remarkable shift in scale: the usual detailing of product design is successfully applied to an interior design project. They effortlessly pick up original features inherent to the early 19th century apartment, like the incredibly deep windowsills and transform them in an impromptu stand-up bar! The studio apartment is complemented by furniture from the Studio Marco Dessi and objects individually selected by the designer.

Odeon

Odeon presents itself with lightness, an effect emphasized by its rear legs being moved inward. It is a delicate and contemporary sofa whose true qualities come to the fore whichever angle the piece is viewed from. Striking lines provide a visual accent on the backrest and seat. Odeon comes in two sizes and is complemented by a matching footrest.

Screen

This new take on a classic folding screen is available in fabric or leather. Wittmann's intricate hand craftsmanship is visible in its characteristical upholstery tecnique, which also provides sound absorbing qualities. Screen is therefore particularly suited for use in a bedroom setting as a room divider or privacy shield.

Orbit

Orbits most remarkable detail is the rim: this particular semi matte feature was achieved by capturing one step in the production process, namely the polishing of the rims after firing. The edge of every piece was extended to a fine, semi-matte, polished rim, which stands in contrast to the glazed surface and emphasizes the materiality of porcelain. For Augarten, the second-oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe, Orbit was the first commission for a dinner service in 40 years. This company has great mastery in producing exquisite ceramics and takes great pride in their colorful hand painted surface decorations.

8 Duralex

The Duralex Picardie glass is a beautiful mass produced industrial product – an icon. By numbering eight of these glasses they became special, an edition of eight: 1/8, 2/8, 3/8 ... The concept was further developed into a decorative feature: the numbers were replaced with engraved dots. The fact that they were hand-engraved elegantly emphasizes the contrast to the industrial product.

Atelier

Brackets are combined with shelves to form a versatile and simple piece of furniture. When mounted the laser cut metal brackets express a lightweight, wing-like look. They come with precut slots for bars to accomodate the use as a kitchen shelf or coatrack. A small acrylic mirror completes the ensemble and can be simply hung on one of the hooks. Screws are covered by the shelf itself, a construction detail that underlines the design’s two-dimensionality.

Reimagining Dagobert Peche

With his extraordinary piece of furniture, the designer Marco Dessí has reimagined Dagobert Peche’s 1913 salon cupboard, which is part of the MAK Furniture Collection. Peche’s original design, which can be seen in the MAK Permanent Collection Vienna 1900, is an unconventionally proportioned, fourdoor cupboard made of black-stained pear wood, which appears to dance on eight delicately curved legs and which is adorned with gilded bouquets of flowers. Dessí studied Peche’s cupboard closely and singled out the features that, in his opinion, were central to making it so unique and enthralling. He then combined them with his own aesthetic using contemporary means of production: the birch plywood body was produced with a CNC lathe before being stained yellow; the legs, made of steel tubing, were given a powder coating—also in yellow. As background he used a wallpaper designed by Peche in 1920 . Mokka

Commissioned by Vacant Galleries, a Vienna-based collective who organized pop-up art shows. The bar is assembled out of 13 modules made of thin metal sheets bent to give utmost stability. Inbuilt illumination underlines the construction and adds lightness and atmosphere. The plain industrial appearance of the counter nicely contrastes the historic patinated environment of Etablissment Gschwandner.

Still life

“With Still Life designer Marco Dessí gives a comprehensive survey of projects that have been realized to date alongside a series of newly developed prototypes that will be presented to the public for the very first time. Dessí defines Still Life as a contemplative snapshot of his works, selected and grouped in light of substantive, emblematic and aesthetic contexts. Exhibition display and individual objects merge into an atmospheric picture that, both in its totality and in detail, offers an unusual and quite personal approach to Dessí’s attitude toward design. The exhibition has been designed with an eye to its location, quoting the room’s architectural elements while evoking an interior-like atmosphere that serves both as a stage and as a set of thematic brackets for the objects presented therein.” Marlies Wirth, curator

La trasportamatite

The TobeUs project is a concept created and organized by Matteo Ragni in Milano. It was born out of the idea of making healthy, sustainable toys that also bring long-lasting aesthetic pleasure: standard-sized wooden cedar stumps are shaped into vehicles by just two placed cuts and the mounting of wheels. The carved lines on the roof are a rendition of the reinforcing ribs used in vehicle design and in this case they transport your pencils.

Inlay

Inlay was realized for 'The Mirror' an exhibition at Designblock 2012 in Prague hosted by the Okolo collective. For this object no additional hinge or mechanism was needed to join together mirror and case. It can serve as a table mirror, the handle permits a use as a hand mirror as well. The bottom of the tube is furnished with a stopper made of felt.

Basket

The design process of this piece originally saw Lobmeyr's traditional Schloss Hof chandelier, an early baroque glass-arm-chandelier, as a reference. The glass rods were reinvented and created a modern looking chandelier with a classic feeling. Inspired by the shape of traditional lanterns, the basket like structure is composed by hexagonally bent glass tubes, which are interwoven with silk chords. The lighting unit, which is what ultimately brings life into a chandelier and determines its quality as a light sculpture, consists of a twisted spiral on a slim pole with halogen bulbs.

Ts.281 "grip"

Developed together with the Lobmeyr craftspeople, a rather technical looking design comes to life. A special lamella cut has been developed by emphasizing on the importance that is ascribed to a haptic pleasure when drinking from a glass - literally the "grip". Similar to the well-known "American Bar" set Adolf Loos designed for Lobmeyr in 1929, the ornament prevents scratch marks on the bottom during use. Complementing its "Grip" the drinking set wants to keep the balance between the delicacy of mouthblown glass and glassware that invites for everyday use. The set consists of shot glass, beer glass, wine glass, double old-fashioned tumbler, water/wine decanter, whiskey decanter, fruit bowl and flower vase.

Dakar table

Dakar Table was developed to compliment the Dakar chair series and meant for in- and outdoor use. Like the corresponding chair it utilizes a combination of bent metal sheets and tubolar steel to solve the structutral issues.

Prater

Prater chair is a stackable wooden chair. The strong graphic impact is the result of CNC-milled plywood; the tooling discloses a charming effect on the material that became part of the production process while perfectly matching standardized production methods
